The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) invites applications for the position of Field Assistant / Driver. This position is funded by African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Support to Agricultural Research for Development of Strategic Crops in Africa (SARD-SC).

Job Title: Field Assistant / Driver (2 year renewable contract)

Position/Responsibilities
  • The Drivers/Field workers will work as members of the SARD-SC project team in Nigeria.

Primary Duties:

  •     Drive Scientists and other research staff to research locations
  •     Ensure that vehicles are properly maintained
  •     Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the supervisor.
  •     Participate actively in the conduct of research experimentations at different sites
  •     Convey research materials to all research and development locations
  •     Assist in the planting and harvesting of maize trials.

Qualification, Experience and Skills

  •     Ordinary National Diploma in Crop Production, General Agriculture, Horticulture or related discipline from a reputable
  •     Ability to perform multiple tasks and work under pressure
  •     Team player
  •     Minimum experience of 2 years in a similar position
  •     Possession of a valid driving license
  •     Good time management

General information: Initial appointment is for two years. Subsequent renewal of the contract will be decided based on research outputs and productivity, and continued need for the position.

Job Title: Laboratory Analyst (2 year renewable contract)

Location:
Ibadan - Oyo

DutiesSuccessful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
  •     Carry out quality control and comprehensive physical, chemical and microbiological analysis of raw water, potable water, swimming pool water and Sewage water at Water treatment plant;
  •     Team up with the operators to carry out operation of the plants;
  •     Generate laboratory reports on daily weekly and monthly basis;
  •     Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
  •     Carry out Jar test to assist the operators in determine appropriate chemical dosage of raw water;
  •     Determine quality of chemicals before purchase;
  •     Initiate purchase of laboratory equipment and reagents;

Qualification and Experience

  • B.Sc/ HND in Science Laboratory Technology or related field plus three (3) years relevant post-qualification working experience.

The candidate must:

  •     Must have a very good knowledge of laboratory analysis of water
  •     Must have a very good knowledge of water treatment plant, swimming and sewage system
  •     Be a good team player and be able to follow instructions;
  •     Be able to work under pressure.

Job Title: Mechanic III (Water Treatment Plant)

Duties
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
  •     Carry out maintenance and repairs at water treatment plant, swimming pool plant, sewage treatment plant and pumping stations;
  •     Install and maintain carbon filters, sand filters ,sedimentation tanks and reservoirs;
  •     Carry out other duties that may be assigned by supervisor.
  •     Install and maintain multi – vertical turbine and surface pumps and blowers
  •     Maintain associated appliance such as aerators, compressors and valves;

Qualification and Experience

  • OND/ Trade Test in Mechanical Engineering or related field plus (5) Years relevant post-qualification working experience.

  •     Be honest and hardworking;
  •     Be a good team player and be able to follow instructions;

Job Title: Equipment Operator (Water Treatment Plant)

Headquarters, Ibadan

Duties
Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:
  •     Carry out operation and maintenance work at water treatment plant, swimming pool plant, Sewage treatment plant, Dam Pumping stations;
  •     Clean water treatment plant, swimming pool, sewage plant, pump stations and its surroundings;
  •     Dose treating chemicals for processing of water;
  •     Repair faulty equipment and plants;
  •     Take hourly reading and record it in operating production sheet;
  •     Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor


Qualification and Experience

Job Title: Agribusiness Coordinator

Location: Abuja, Nigeria.

Position/Responsibilities
The Agribusiness Coordinator will work with other team members to maintain the sustainable supply of cassava roots to targeted cassava starch/gari factories recommended by public-private sector investors to increase the income and food security of small-scale farmers. The other tasks are as follows:
  •     Coordinate the day to day implementation of all the cassava value chain projects. This involves the selection, clustering, mobilization, and training of farmers, identification of efficient service providers, establishment of Demonstration and Multiplication Trials, processing facilities, and organizing field days. It also includes making regular monitoring and evaluation visits.
  •     Coordinate the collection of field data and analyses with the IITA Biometrics Unit.
  •     Prepare technical and financial reports periodically as required by each investor.
  •     Assist in demonstrating the economics of cassava root supply using a farmers’ cluster model.
  •     In conjunction with other scientists, develop extension leaflets, scientific articles for peer-reviewed journals, IITA Bulletin, and other magazines/periodicals.
  •      Ensure that the targets specified in each project are met at the specified time.
  •     Assist in the procurement of inputs (germplasm, herbicides, fertilizer, etc) and their distribution to farmers.
  •     Supervise all field staff and activities in the project States (Oyo, Ondo, Edo, Niger, Kogi, Imo, Anambra, Jigawa etc).
  •     Perform any other duties assigned by the Project Manager and the Director, R4D West Africa Hub.

Educational Qualifications

The candidate should hold at least a Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics, Agribusiness, Business Management, Food Science and Technology, Agriculture/Agronomy or other related fields.

Core Competencies:

  •     Minimum of 8 years working experience in an agricultural research organization.
  •     Good knowledge of the Cassava Value Chain.
  •     Good team spirit, with readiness to participate as a team member in the accomplishment of duties.
  •     Excellent English reporting, writing, and oral communication skills.
  •     Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word and Power Point).
  •     Strong ability to coordinate, prioritise and organise workload; take the initiative, and work under pressure.

Duty Station: Abuja, Nigeria.

General information: Initial appointment is for three years. IITA offers a competitive remuneration package paid in US dollars.
